How To Measure Your Roof

Our goal is to be fair, we don’t want to over-charge, or under-charge.  From our years of experience, this simple process is quite accurate.  These calculators are here for you to have an accurate idea of what your roofing will cost.  We re-measure every project before entering into a contract.  That process is called our Technical Measure, and you can always call and ask us to come do that for you. Estimate your sizes to the nearest foot.

What you’ll need:

  • Tape measure (we recommend 50’ long, but any will do)

  • Pencil

  • Note pad

  • Print out of E-Z-Pitch Finder

Steps to measure your roof:

Step #1  Measure the back of your house.

Measure the distance across the front or back of your home – record it as main house width.  Measure where the roof starts… not just the house, but include the overhang of your roof.  (Sometimes the back of a home is easier to measure than the front.)

Step #2  Measure the Side of your house.

Measure the distance along the side of your house – and record it as main house length.  Again, measure where the roof starts… not just the house, but include the overhang of your roof.

Step #3 Count the valleys.

Count and enter the number of valleys on your home.  Back away from the house and look for metal valleys, or any place that two sections of roofing come together to form a valley.

Step #4  Identify the pitch (or steepness) of your roof.

If you can walk on it, it is usually 6 pitch or less.  Print off our pitch finder and use it as a guide.

Step #5  Count the vents & pipes.

Count and enter the number of vents, pipes, or any protrusions you have sticking through your roof.

Step #6 Other buildings: Garages, Sheds, etc

Measure any sun rooms, garages, or sheds that you want to include in your bid the same way you measured your main house.

Help and hints:

If you need a little help with your home, we can pull it up with some satellite images and give you a little guidance over the phone. Call 763-954-1642.

When you look at your home from an airplane, it is usually comprised of a series of rectangles.  One rectangle is the main house.  Another one is the garage.  Some homes have a sun room or even an out-building.  You are going to measure these rectangles.  For some people it may be easiest to draw out these rectangles from a bird’s eye view prior to measuring; however, for others it may just be easier just to start measuring.
